Emergency Plumbing: What to Do Before the Plumber Arrives

When a pipe bursts or water starts spreading across the floor, the first few minutes matter. You do not need plumbing experience to limit the damage, you just need to know what to do first, and what to avoid.

Shut Off the Water Immediately

Every home has a main water shutoff valve, usually located near the water meter or where the main line enters the house. Turning this off stops new water from flowing in, which is the single most effective thing you can do in the first moments of a leak or burst pipe. It is worth locating this valve now, before an emergency happens, so you are not searching for it while water is spreading.

Turn Off the Water Heater If Needed

If the emergency involves your water heater, or if you have shut off the main water supply for an extended repair, turn off the power or gas supply to the unit as well. Running a water heater without water flowing through it can damage the unit further.

Protect Your Belongings

Once the water is off, move furniture, electronics, and valuables away from the affected area if it is safe to do so. Towels or buckets can help contain water that is already on the floor while you wait for help to arrive.

Document the Damage

Taking a few photos or a short video of the affected area can be useful later, whether for your own records or for an insurance claim. This only takes a minute and can save time and hassle down the road.

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Do not attempt to fix a gas line issue yourself under any circumstances. If you smell gas, leave the area and call for help immediately rather than trying to locate the source. Avoid using electrical outlets or appliances near standing water, and do not turn the main water supply back on until a plumber has confirmed it is safe to do so.
